The number that matters
Percent OC (10%, 18%) is how much pepper extract is in the can, not how hot it is. Scoville heat units describe the raw pepper, not the spray. The figure that compares sprays is major capsaicinoids (MC), typically 0.7% to 1.4% on consumer sprays; when a product lists it, use it. When it does not, judge on format, range and a reputable maker, and practise with the one you buy.
Shelf life
Two to four years; the date is on the can. The propellant loses pressure before the OC loses potency, so an expired can sprays short. Replace on the date, and test-fire a short burst outdoors, downwind, once when new so the first press is not the real one.
Carry
Keychain sprays clip to keys and are the ones actually carried. Flip-top canisters live in a purse or a door pocket. Holsters for belt carry are in stock for the larger canisters. Whatever you buy, it must be reachable in two seconds or it is decoration; see practice and carry.
